![]() With f.lux, especially on the strongest bedtime mode, colours sometimes become hard to differentiate making it impossible to do design work while using f.lux.There's no in-between mode like f.lux, and it changes between the two quite readily. The transition of f.lux between modes is done slowly so as you barely notice it. f.lux has three modes: daytime, sunset, and bedtime, each mode more warm than the previous.Even when set to its most warm setting, Night Shift leaves the screen noticeably cooler than f.lux's default.Ī quick comparison between Night Shift and f.lux: They both allow you to choose the level of filtering, but Night Shift isn't anywhere near as "strong" as f.lux on default settings. Night Shift and f.lux are different in their approach to filtering blue light. It's up for debate whether or not utilities such as Night Shift and f.lux affect your sleep for the better, but I just like the fact it feels better on the eyes to stare at a warmer screen at night. I've been using f.lux for about three years now, and absolutely love it. f.lux serves a similar purpose to Night Shift in that it slowly warms the colour temperature of your computer display after sunset. Night Shift is novel for iOS users, but not so much for Mac or PC users who've had the option of using utility software such as f.lux since 2009. Night Shift adjusts the colour temperature of a screen to the warmer end of the spectrum (removing blue light) at night, and is supposed to be easier on your eyes, and possibly even help you sleep better. The headline feature of this update is Night Shift - which has been around on iOS for just over a year. I just hope Apple will make it even better before releasing it.Last week as a part of an assortment of software updates across its platforms, Apple updated macOS to version 12.12.4. Sunset + 2 and Sunrise +1 is what I have for my WeMo Light Switch controller my exterior lighting.į.lux is not available through legit means, but iOS 9.3 will come out fairly soon. The scheduling could also be better and similar to the WeMo scheduling where you can introduce a factor to the sunset and sunrise. Yes, it can! Apple could make it even darker, perhaps 3 ticks would cover all the possible needs of users, for me, 2 extra ticks would be perfect. Quite the opposite without any of them, many nights were up with a rough start before mid-November.Įye strain is also down and I can tell, by use of Sleep++, that I do sleep better. But not a single night using F.lux did I had issues falling asleep. Personally, it’s more a question of what type of show I watch that will keep me awake. Perhaps I’m too used to F.lux, which I’ve been using every night since mid-November. Even starting with Night Shift, it was still too bright and still caused eye fatigue. These extra ticks are what makes the whole difference for me. F.lux can go much closer to an orange tint, perhaps two ticks further than Night Shift’s maximum value. The intended schedule is to have it on while I watch tv shows in bed, but off when I’m up in the morning.Īll in all they both work great, but I prefer F.lux for a very simple reason, in pitch dark I find Night Shift to be quite a bit brighter than F.lux. With Night Shift, I set it to start at 9pm and end at 6AM. I ended up only setting it once in my bed. You can manually activate it or go the automatic route for which you either set from Sunset to Sunrise, or a custom schedule.į.lux had a schedule too but it was not as simple as start and end times. F.lux iOSĪpple has included in Night Shift a few modes to personalize your experience. Apple kindly asked them to stop distributing the project, which they did.Īnd now two months later, Apple releases its own version. F.lux was also released not long ago as an Xcode project that you would compile yourself because of use of private APIs. ![]() Night Shift is the brain child of F.lux, the years old Mac app that reduces the blue light emitted by a Mac screen. Others report headaches, dizziness and similar effects, but in general it’s either hard to fall asleep or you simply do not have a resting sleep. Therefore, some individuals cannot use a computer screen in the last hours of the day without having a negative impact on their sleep. With iOS 9.3 Apple has included a new feature called Night Shift that will change the colour balance of the screen in order to minimize the blue light emitted from it.īlue light has properties of causing eye fatigue as well as lowering (or completely stopping) your secretion of melatonin, the hormone that causes sleepiness. ![]()
